Areas of Learning and Development

At Delarue Nursery School, we believe in laying a secure foundation for future learning. We work with “The Early Years Foundation Stage” in all aspect of our planning, observations, record keeping etc. Each area of learning and development is divided as follows:

  1. PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
The children learn to respect one another and their belongings and to share whilst waiting their turn. They form relationships with adults and their peers through play and examples of others. Children develop their self-confidence and self-esteem in a caring environment and are encouraged to become independent.
  2. COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
The children learn to listen to one another and their teachers at “news time” and share their thoughts with their peers through play and listening to stories. Children continuously extend their vocabulary through songs, rhymes and poems and talking about their experiences. The children learn to link sounds and letters of the alphabet. They are encouraged to borrow books from Nursery School to share at home. The children are encouraged to develop pencil control and to recognise letters and words.
  3. PROBLEM SOLVING, REASONING AND NUMERACY
Children learn shapes, mathematical language, numbers, size and quantity through all aspects of Nursery School routine. The children also have access to a computer. Many activities and games are planned to encourage children to develop a good mathematical understanding in all areas. We use songs, rhymes and poems to help teach the children numbers and counting.
  4. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD
Children are taught about other cultures by celebrating festivals around the world, by tasting different foods, dressing up, stories and activities to stimulate interest in the world around us. Through child and adult initiated activities children learn to explore, investigate, design and create. The children are encouraged to bring nature into the classroom to share with others.
  5. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Our outside equipment, including a climbing frame, slides, bicycles and cars, encourage many skills to be learnt whilst playing. Inside, we offer many materials and equipment to develop your child’s fine and gross motor movements. Musical movement plays an important part in learning and spatial awareness. We strongly encourage a healthy environment.
  6. CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT
Through art, dance, acting out plays and stories children are encouraged to express their ideas and communicate their feelings, so gaining in confidence. We produce two plays a year in which all children participate in the painting of scenery, making of props, singing, and acting.  Imagination is developed at all times through imaginative play using our many resources.
